October 22nd - A very special concert
Modern Disney classics and alternative rock were on the menu for this year’s “Taunton Vale Rotary Queen’s Concert”.
Two bus loads of children from the district’s special schools provided both the stars and the audience for the event which takes its popular name from the traditional venue – the theatre at Taunton’s Queen’s College.
The youngsters, from Selworthy and Polden Bower schools, were on fine form, both on the stage and in the stalls.
Numbers included the REM hit –“Loosing my religion” and a heart tugging presentation of “Do you want to build a snowman?” from the film Frozen. Other performances ranged from song and dance solos, through a quintet to a stage musical chorus. For the first time (at a Queen’s concert) several of the young artists performed to video backing tracks.
That the event was a popular success can be judged from the energy of the performers and the enthusiasm of the audience – many of whom could be seen singing along to favourites even when it wasn’t their turn on stage.
Topping off the event was a brilliant set from the internationally acclaimed, Taunton based trumpeter - Luis Martelo. We are hugely grateful that he took time out from a busy schedule (he was flying out to perform in Canada the following day). Luis offered his services in return for a donation to a charity of his choice.
Taunton Vale Rotary would also like to thank Queen’s College, and particularly their theatre staff and technicians, for hosting the event over the last decade or so. Thanks too to 2024 Master of Ceremonies - Jo Wilson-Hunt, who stepped into the role at the last minute, and Berry’s Coaches for discounted travel.
The students had a truly wonderful time returning to their schools in a state of great excitement.
