Tea in a Tent - celebrating 25 years of ShelterBox.

A forecast of 25 mph winds and 25 millimetres of rain didn’t stop Taunton Vale Rotarians and their supporters celebrating 25 years of ShelterBox by taking afternoon Tea in a Tent.

The disaster relief charity, which provides tents and emergency survival equipment packed in an easily transportable plastic box, was started by a South West Rotary club as a Millennium project.   Today it operates across the globe and last year provided shelter and survival gear for 60 thousand people who’d lost their homes as a result of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and, increasingly, by war and other man-made disasters.

As one participant observed: “The poor weather was fortuitous as it made us all appreciate the vital need for shelter.”   Another said: “To step in to a Shelter Box tent and to see the equipment gave us many thoughts of how amazing it must be to receive one.”

Nearly £600 was raised by the event which, by happy co-incidence, is just enough to fund a fully furbished ShelterBox and help a future family in distress.
