Toilet Twinning
Taunton Vale Rotary is partnering with a club in South Africa to provide improved sanitation for a primary school.
Gillitts Primary School, serves a disadvantaged area on the outskirts of Kloof, a town with a population of just under 30 thousand, approximately 26 km north-west of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
Since 2011 the school student population has more than doubled. Though new classrooms have been built, very young pupils face a 200 metre walk to access the current sanitary facilities.
RC Kloof was approached by Gillitts Primary School to convert an unused, former library building into a toilet block to serve the two new classrooms which are at the far end of the school site.
Work under way
Kloof Rotarian, Tony Robson, says: “The project is fully aligned with the Rotary International ‘Water and Sanitation’ area of focus and will meet the needs of Gillitts Primary School for additional toilet facilities. Because the project will utilise existing infrastructure the cost is relatively modest.”
The grant from Taunton Vale will cover approximately two fifths of the 70,000 Rand cost of the project.
